Gov. Mary Fallin Proclaims Girl Scout Day in Oklahoma

In honor of the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts today, Gov. Mary Fallin has declared it Girl Scout Day in Oklahoma.

In the proclamation, the governor – who is a Girl Scout – wrote:

“March 12, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Ga. Throughout its’ distinguished history, Girl Scouting has inspired millions of girls and women with courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place. Through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls develop the skills and lessons that will serve them throughout their lives so that they may contribute to their communities. Girl Scouting takes an active role in increasing girls’ awareness of the opportunities in math, science, sports, technology and many fields of interest that can expand their horizons. Girl Scouts in Oklahoma are actively addressing the needs of girls through a leadership program that builds self-esteem, confidence, and addressing challenges for girls including drop-out
rates, births to teens, obesity and poverty. The state of Oklahoma acknowledges and applauds the efforts of Girl Scouts in our state by celebrating its 100th year of leadership and making the future women of Oklahoma confident and skilled leaders of tomorrow. Millions of Girl Scout members nationwide and thousands of girls in Oklahoma will celebrate this American tradition today.”

Throughout the 100th year, Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma will host several 100th events. Today, girls and volunteers will gather at the new Girl Scout Shop in Oklahoma City for a special birthday party, featuring Girl Scout founder
Juliette Gordon Low look-alike, Girl Scouts and more.

On March 21, more than 800 Girl Scouts from across the state will visit the Capitol for Girl Scouts Day at the Capitol to honor 100 years of serving girls and advocating for issues that support girls. Honorary Troop 1912, featuring only women who have been elected to office in Oklahoma, will be pinned on the steps of the Capitol.

100th Anniversary Feature

As part of our 100th celebrations, we have been receiving all kinds of historic stories and photos from women who were Girl Scouts in this area from decades past. Most recently, we received this story that was published in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper back in 1935 (our council was officially formed in 1939) featuring a young Margery LeVern Robinson. As a young Girl Scout, she was part of an in-school troop in OKC.

100th Anniversary Patch

Next year will be a big one for Girl Scouts across the country. 2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts, and girls in Oklahoma are already gearing up for the year-long celebration.

Girl Scouts from across the state recently competed in a 100th patch design contest hosted by Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma and Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma. Nearly 200 girls submitted designs, with the winning design going to 14-year-old Kara White of Broken Arrow.

The winning design was selected from 6 finalists – three from western Oklahoma and three from eastern Oklahoma. The creative team at Third Degree Advertising in Oklahoma City was presented all six designs without knowing who designed them or even what town the girls are from or their ages.

Amanda Lowery, executive vice president for Third Degree Advertising, said the decision was a tough one for the team to make. She said the team decided the winning design “had the best overall layout and they liked what was perceived to be a concept of girls from different backgrounds and ages holding hands.”

The patch design finalists were:
• Lauren York, 12, and Rosie Perez, 10, both of Broken Arrow
• Elana Trejo, 10, of Choctaw
• Mariah Waibel, 12 of Oklahoma City
• Morgann Martin, 8, of Alva

The patches will be available for purchase in the Girl Scout shops in Oklahoma City and Tulsa early next year.

USPS Celebrates Scouting with Stamp

The Postal Service recently announced that it will salute the Girl Scouts in 2012 by commemorating

the 100th anniversary of an organization credited with helping girls build character and leadership skills. The Celebrate Scouting Forever Stamp can be seen on social media and will be issued next year as part of the centennial celebration.

Using social media to reach broader, more diverse audiences is an initiative that began this month to engage more interest in stamp collecting. Select stamps from the 2012 commemorative program will be previewed one at a time throughout the summer.

"Celebrate Scouting, the 'sister' stamp to the 2010 Scouting stamp, pays tribute to scouting organizations for the opportunities and pleasures they have provided millions of  youths worldwide," said Stephen Kearney, manager, Stamp Services.

The stamp art was created by Craig Frazier of Mill Valley, CA; under the guidance of art director Derry Noyes of Washington, D.C. Customers may preview the stamps on Facebook, through Twitter @USPSstamps or on the website Beyond the Perf.
